I wrote an article recently for Covenant Eyes on the subject of “Why Marriage Won’t Cure Your Porn Problem.”
In a nutshell, we need to have cultivated discipline and mastery of self before we take our marital vows, not after. There’s no magical power in the wedding ring; it isn’t forged in the fires of Mt. Doom or Mt. Virtue. We live in a world of temptation and will do so until we die. But if we value our spouse, our vocation, or our future vocation, we will rid ourselves of anything that inhibits the call to love selflessly now and not later.
In the seminary, we were told that, “The seminarian you are today is the priest you’ll be tomorrow.” Basically, don’t except to have a great prayer life as a priest if you are too lazy to do so now. Likewise, the man or woman you are today is the spouse you’ll be tomorrow. If you’re a cranky person in the morning, nothing magically changes once you have a collar on your neck or a ring on your finger (trust me…mornings are still awful). Grace builds on nature. The time to be virtuous is today.
